Meta-Sex 94: Identity, Body and Sexuality

Museum of Art, Ein Harod; Bat Yam Museum, Israel

June - August 1994

Meta-Sex 94 (co-curated with Prof. Tamar Elor) was one of the first exhibitions in Israel that dealt with gender issues. It reflected a local (as well as international) tendency that culminated in the 1990’s: a preoccupation with issues of sexuality and identity that challenged conventional definitions and political expectations. The 15 participating artists presented inventory of images of body parts, sexual implements, personal articles, domestic objects, hygiene-related items, eating and secretion, kitchenware, motherhood, women-soldiers, brides, feeding instruments, biological mutations and consumption products. The works in Meta-Sex challenged the accepted relationships of woman-mother, woman-nature, woman-home, woman-dirt and woman-man, concurrently undermining feminine conventions.

Participating artists

Tiranit Barzilay, Anat Betzer-Shapira, Miriam Cabessa, Galit Eilat, Max Friedmann, Ayelet Hashahar Cohen, Nir Hod, Merilou Levin, Ariane Littman-Cohen, Hila Lulu Lin, Tamara Masel, Ganit Mayslits-Kassif, Michal Shamir, Meira Shemesh, Anat Zahor
